Abstract: This paper proposes a novel framework for current OFDM systems to reduce the inter-carrier interference (ICI) caused by time-varying channels. The new ICI suppressing scheme is based on the application of the sum-product (SP) algorithm to a factor graph (FG) representing the joint a posteriori probability (APP) of the transmitted symbols. Simulation results show that this new iterative soft-input soft-output (SISO) detection strategy achieves good performance when the ICI power is high, due to high mobility or the use of large FFT sizes. We discuss its application in mobile reception of the new terrestrial digital television standard DVB-T2 for a set of realistic mobile scenarios. |

Abstract: We propose a new pilot structure for inter-carrier interference (ICI) estimation and compensation in order to improve the performance in mobile environments in the forthcoming Digital Video Broadcasting-Next Generation Handheld (DVBNGH) standard. In fixed environments the classical Wiener channel estimation technique turns out to be a good choice whereas in mobile scenarios the channel can be approximated by a basis expansion model (BEM) to include the ICI introduced due to the channel variations within one OFDM symbol. Additionally some terrestrial digital television transmission modes suffer from error floor, so we propose a combination of ICI cancellation algorithms with BEM channel estimation to combat the ICI. The results show a negligible degradation between the ideal channel knowledge and BEM estimation with large Doppler frequencies as well as the good performance of ICI cancellation algorithms |

Abstract: Recent and next-generation wireless broadcasting standards, such as DVB-T2 or DVB-NGH, are considering distributed multi-antenna transmission in order to increase bandwidth efficiency and signal quality. Full-rate full-diversity (FRFD) space-time codes (STC), such as the Golden code, have been reported to be excellent candidates, being their main drawback their detection complexity, which is enhanced when soft output is required when combined with a bit-interleaved coded modulation (BICM) scheme based on low-density parity check (LDPC) codes. We present a novel low-complexity soft detection algorithm for the reception of Golden codes in LDPC-based orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) systems. Complexity and simulation-based performance results are provided which show that the proposed detector performs close to the optimal detector in a variety of DVB-T2 broadcasting scenarios. |

Abstract: The constellation rotation and cyclic Q-delay technique has been adopted in the second generation terrestrial digital video broadcasting (DVB-T2) standard. It improves the performance under fading channels, but introduces serious complexity problems in the hardware implementation of the demapper. Presented is a simplified demapper scheme that reduces up to 31% the number of required operations with almost no performance degradation. |

Abstract: Presented are the C/N requirements for DVB-T2 fixed reception. Results have been obtained from field trials carried out to test DVB-T2 performance, considering an outdoor rooftop antenna scenario. Two commercial receivers have been used to obtain C/N threshold values for an image error-free condition. The tested configuration modes are the ones recommended for this scenario: 32K FFT and 64 and 256 QAM constellations. DVB-T has also been measured to obtain direct comparison between both systems. |

Abstract: The Doppler spread limits the achievable throughput in Digital Video Broadcasting Satellite to Handheld (DVB-SH) receivers, mainly in mobile environments for moderate and high speeds. The Doppler on the reception of Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) signals causes the Intercarrier Interference (ICI), which degrades significantly the receiver performance. The cancellation of this interference term is required to improve the DVB-SH reception robustness in highly mobile environments. This paper proposes a new ICI cancellation scheme with a reduced hardware complexity, which was previously analyzed in Digital Video Broadcasting for Handhelds (DVB-H) receiver terminals. This technique is compared with other existing method that presents an ideal behavior in the ICI compensation. Simulations results show that the proposed method presents similar performance with a very important reduction of the required hardware resources. |

Abstract: In this paper, the rotated constellations are analyzed in the context of the upcoming Second Generation Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB-T2) standard. Compared to the use of non-rotated constellations, this technique provides a significant increase of the system performance in severe propagation scenarios. The main target of this paper is to analyze the effect of the rotation angle on the system robustness. Simulations have been run showing that the angles defined in the DVB-T2 specification are close to the optimum but other angles can be selected that offer better performance. |

Abstract: In this paper, we present a simplified statistical model for DVB-SH (Digital Video Broadcasting - Satellite services to Handhelds) links in urban areas. It is valid for situations of moderate shadowing, and it allows to predict the fading depth relative to the line-of-sight value. The model should be useful for obtaining a first approximation of the performance of a DVB-SH link in urban areas. The results are validated with experimental data obtained from an Eutelsat satellite within the FURIA project. |

Abstract: The goal of the future terrestrial and mobile digital video broadcasting standards is to combine diversity and spatial multiplexing in order to fully exploit the multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channel capacity. Full-rate full-diversity (FR-FD) space-time codes
(STC) such as the Golden code, that maximize the rate preserving the diversity gain, are studied for that purpose. Most of them present a high-complexity detection problem which results in a handicap for their hardware implementation. Therefore, we analyze the performance of a sub-optimal full-rate full-diversity 2x2 STC, whose design reduces the complexity of the detection, as an alternative for future MIMO broadcasting TV systems. The assessment of the proposed STC code is carried out over the bit-interleaved coded modulation
(BICM) scheme of DVB-T2 system which includes lowdensity parity check (LDPC) codes for error correction. Finally, soft STC list detection is studied in order to generate soft information for LDPC decoding

Abstract: The increasing interest in MIMO (Multiple-Input Multiple-Output) systems has given rise to a prolific research activity in recent years. Both theoretical and practical issues have been studied. However, so far few MIMO testbeds or prototypes have been built for DVB-T or future standards. In this paper, a novel 2 × 2 MIMO testbed specifically designed for evaluating the performances of a DVB-T2 MIMO system is presented. The description of signal processing is detailed including a new scheme to estimate the MIMO channel matrix. Finally, measurement results with different polarization schemes are presented for typical scenarios, obtaining higher capacity in LoS situations using polarization diversity. |

Abstract: As most state-of-the-art terrestrial transmissions standards, DVB-T2 uses orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) as modulation scheme. For performing channel estimation and equalization normally so-called frequency domain pilots are employed. As pilots are known information to the receiver, they do not carry any information and are thus overhead. Therefore, DVB-T2 also allows for a mode with nearly no frequency domain pilots, whereby the channel estimation is based on the data itself. This paper shows the high performance and throughput benefits of this pilot-free transmission and blind channel estimation technique while proposing an optimized algorithm. |
